Hurricane Response Plan: Essential Personnel

48 hours prior to the expected hurricane strike on the Newport News area (or as directed by the Governor), the University will evacuate all students, faculty and staff.

An Emergency Command Center will be established in University Police building. The Center will be stocked with emergency supplies, such as flashlights, batteries, water, radios, non-perishable food and first-aid supplies.

A Recovery Center will be set up in McMurran Hall and will also be stocked with emergency supplies. This will be the primary operating site after the storm for IT Services and “essential personnel.”

Which employees are considered "essential personnel?"

  • University Police and Dispatcher
  • IT Services core personnel
  • Plant Operations personnel as determined by supervisor
  • Emergency Management Team
  • Vice Presidents and Department Directors
  • Director of Communications and Public Relations and Web Master
  • Other persons, as may be designated as essential in view of circumstances at the particular time.

All essential personnel are expected to return immediately upon the storm's passing to assess damages and begin cleanup of their area. They will convene in the Recovery Center to create a plan for restoring the University to working order.

What are the tasks of essential personnel?
Essential personnel are subject to call out beginning 72 hours prior to, during and after the hurricane. Please visit the link to your specific area for more details:
